    Kim Kardashian West had already been public about her struggles with psoriasis after being diagnosed with the autoimmune condition on a 2011 episode of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians.” Then in 2019 she revealed new symptoms of pain and stiffness in hands that were so bad she “couldn’t even pick up a toothbrush.” After false-positive tests for rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, Kardashian West learned she had developed psoriatic arthritis. She says she is now on effective medication and hopes her story “can help anyone else with an autoimmune disease feel confident that there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

    Writer, actor and director Dax Shepard has talked on his podcast, “Armchair Expert,” about living with psoriatic arthritis. Shepard first noticed symptoms in his foot and knee while working on the 2010 film “When in Rome.” His wife, actress Kristen Bell, told Women’s Health magazine she herself recently discovered she has celiac disease, and together she and Shepard have eliminated gluten from their diet, which they say has helped relieve their autoimmune symptoms.

    Professional golfer Phil Mickelson was preparing for the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach when he woke with pain so severe he almost couldn’t get out of bed. After seeing a rheumatologist, Mickelson was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, but fortunately, his diagnosis was an early one. He was able to find effective treatment and continue his successful golf career. In 2019 Mickelson won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, becoming the oldest winner of that event at age 48.
